Washington’s world-famous Smithsonian Institution has announced the finalists of its 11th annual photo competition. Sixty finalists have been selected from more than 50,000 images submitted from 132 countries across the world, and placed into six categories for its in-house journal: Altered Images, Americana, Mobile, Natural World, People and Travel.

This image, by Nicolas Reusens in the Altered Images category, features a red-eyed tree frog underwater in El Arenal, Costa Rica.
