Woman declared insane after drowning daughter in bathtub freed
Jennifer Lynn Bigham was found not guilty by reason of insanity after she drowned her 3-year-old daughter in a bathtub in her home.
A California woman who was declared insane after she drowned her three-year-old daughter in a bathtub has been released from a secure medical facility, according to The Modesto Bee.
A judge ordered jail officials to release Jennifer Lynn Bigham from custody because doctors say she is no longer insane, the newspaper reported.
Bigham, 26, was found not guilty of murder and child abuse by reason of insanity in connection with the death of her daughter, Alexandrea Bigham, which occurred three years ago.
During a hearing Tuesday, the report said, two doctors testified that Bigham no longer shows the symptoms which they say led to a psychotic breakdown and caused her to drown her daughter. According to Sacramento news station CBS13, they were the same doctors who declared her to be insane at the time of her daughter’s death.
Deputy District Attorney Elaine Casillas, however, argued that Bigham is still a danger to society and the court failed to ask pertinent questions to the doctors related to her psychological health. Casillas plans to file an appeal, Tthe Modesto Bee reported, though it will not affect Bigham’s release.
