Northwest winds

Arctic air spread across much of the nation Friday, with temperatures falling dramatically and, in many areas, below zero. See gallery

Northwest winds produced 3-foot waves at Stony Point, Minn., bringing out surfers despite frigid temps on Thursday. Among them was Matt Nelson of Two Harbors, Minn., who only began surfing last spring. An Arctic air system has descended on Minnesota and much of the Midwest, bringing with it bitterly cold winds.

Frigid but 'hanging 10'

Northwest winds produced 3-foot waves at Stony Point, Minn., bringing out surfers despite frigid temps on Thursday. Among them was a surfer who went only by the name "Hollywood," who said he moved to the area from California because surfing there "has been ruined by too many people." He called surfing at Stony Point a "gem" and said he relishes the solitude he finds during winter surfing there.
