Kristin Beck, formerly Chris, said she's been grappling with her gender identity since she was a child, ABC News reported. After leaving the SEALs in 2011, she started wearing women's clothing and began hormone therapy in preparation for eventual gender reassignment surgery.

She disclosed the gender transition in her recently published biography, "Warrior Princess."

In the book's preface, Beck said she wrote the book "to reach out to all of the younger generation and encourage you to live your life fully and to treat each other with compassion, be good to each other, especially in your own backyard (whether it be high school or your community)."
