Rumor: William 'The Refrigerator' Perry is dead

William Perry of the Chicago Bears pursues the play against the Los Angeles Rams during the NFC Championship game at Soldier Field January 12, 1986 in Chicago.

Is the former NFL defensive lineman and Clemson football star, known as William "The Refrigerator" Perry, really dead?

FALSE: The confusion seems to have stemmed from two people in one town having the same name

William "The Refrigerator" Perry came to prominence for one reason: He was bigger than just about anyone else who had ever played in the National Football League. Perry was a defensive tackle and occasional running back for the Chicago Bears, including the 1985 team that steamrolled its way to a Super Bowl win. But according to a now-deleted post at Clemson Tigers blog TigerNet, Perry died Wednesday.

As you might have guessed by that "now-deleted" line, Perry, who graduated from Clemson, is actually very much alive. At least that's what his brother told the school's alumni association in news that TigerNet eventually reported.

As one blog noted, the confusion seemed to originate from the fact that another man with a similar name died in the same town, Aiken, S.C., where Perry currently lives. Sure enough, there is in fact more than one “William Perry” in Aiken.

The Inquisitr rightly points out that though Perry may still be alive, that doesn't mean he's in the best of health. The last time anyone wrote at length about him, he was more than 400 pounds and struggling just to get in and out of bed.
