Rumor: The Sacramento Kings are moving to Seattle

A tweet from a sports agent’s daughter sent the Web into a tizzy over rumors that the Kings are about to become the new SuperSonics.

UNCONFIRMED: NBA team the Sacramento Kings have been sold and will move to Seattle
It’s no rumor that a group of investors are in the midst of grand plans to build a new sports arena and lure an NBA team and possibly an NHL team to the Emerald City. What is a rumor -- as reported by the Sacramento Bee, Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Sports Illustrated --  is that the plan has taken a giant leap forward with the sale of the Sacramento Kings to that very group of Seattle investors.

‘Not true,’ say Kings
After initially remaining silent on the rumored sale, a Kings spokesperson later told CBS Sacramento that “rumors regarding the team being sold are simply not true.” Meanwhile, hedge fund manager Chris Hansen, the head of the investor group, has yet to comment (find out how much Hansen has offered to pay for the Kings).

A tweet that started it all
A food blogger might seem a strange source for starting a sports rumor that catches like wildfire, but Daina Falk isn’t only a food blogger, she’s also the daughter of big-name sports agent David Falk; so when she tweeted news of the supposed sale, ears perked up (find Falk on Twitter). Perhaps more telling than Falk’s tweet has been the relative silence by those who could dispel the rumor. Kings spokesman Eric Rose said that the team is not commenting on the supposed sale, and hedge fund manager Chris Hansen, the head of the Seattle investor group, has yet to comment (find out how much Hansen has offered to pay for the Kings).

Kings’ other destination falls through
The Kings-to-Seattle rumor comes on the heels of talks breaking down that could have sent the team to Virginia Beach, Va. As the Sacramento Bee reports, Virginia Beach halted its long-shot bid to lure the Kings. But where Virginia Beach’s resources are few, Seattle’s are many and most analysts suggest that the Pacific Northwest has the best chance of becoming the Kings’ new home (see all the latest coverage on the rumor).
