Rumor: Obama called 4th of July gathering 'crap' on open mic

Did President Barack Obama complain that he had to 'miss a good day of golf for this crap' at an Independence Day gathering?

FALSE: A satirical article set off the rumor

Rumors spread on the web after an article claimed President Barack Obama on Independence Day was caught with an open microphone saying things like this: "I can't believe I have to miss a good game of golf for this crap!"

"You’d think we’d stop celebrating the birth of the worst imperial power in history —but no,” Obama is quoted as saying as he made his way from the podium at the White House lawn. Among other comments, he's quoted as saying: "...Could have been at Oakmont with Jay-Z now trying out that new Callaway set Alec (Baldwin) gave me last year!"

It's satire

The over-the-top prose appeared at DuhProgressive.com, which describes itself as a Libertarian/conservative version of the satirical news site The Onion. The story is false. It's totally made up, Snopes confirms.

But some mistake the story as real. Examples: "Does anyone think this is grounds to look for another president?" states one of the reader comments at DuhProgressive.

"I cant believe how low this guy is. This is the greatest Country in the world. How did he ever become its leader," states a commenter at Gunbroker's forum.

"I think it's good that a president admitted that we're the worst imperial power in history," a commenter posted at Shroomery.org. "Explains a lot about his actions," wrote a commenter at another forum. "Websites posting a RECORDING are being taken down! PIN & SPREAD IT," urged a commenter on another forum.
