After breaching the email accounts of Bush family members, the hacker exposed personal photos and information.
CONFIRMED: The Secret Service is now investigating the email hacking and publication of personal emails and photos of the Bush family
The Secret Service is investigating after personal photos, sensitive information and email correspondence between members of the Bush family, including both former U.S. presidents, were exposed by a hacker, according to a CNN report.
The photos and emails, which dated from 2009 to 2012, were branded with a watermark of “Guccifer” and uploaded on Thursday to an online account, according to The Smoking Gun. The term “Guccifer” appears to be the alias of the person who is responsible for the hack.
According to The Smoking Gun, the hacker compromised at least six email accounts, including those for both former presidents, their siblings and their children.
The hacker reportedly obtained confidential lists of home addresses, cellphone numbers and information about George H.W. Bush’s recent hospitalization and talks about a eulogy.
Some of the photos intercepted by the hacker show George H.W. Bush with Bill Clinton at the Bush family compound in Maine, George W. Bush with Ralph Lauren and George W. Bush posing with a cardboard cutout of himself. (See more photos here.)
The hacker also reportedly found emails from two months ago that George W. Bush sent to his sister showing self-portraits of him in a bathtub and showering, along with other paintings he was working on, including a portrait of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church.
One of the hacked emails was allegedly a personal message from President Barack Obama to George H.W. Bush and was forwarded by presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett in late December.
The president reportedly wrote, “Michelle and I haven’t wanted to impinge on you while you are recuperating, but please know that we are thinking of you and the entire family.”
According to The Smoking Gun, the hacker claims to have compromised hundreds of accounts and “the feds” have been investigating him “a long time.”
Secret Service investigates
"The Secret Service is investigating this matter," said agency spokesman Ed Donovan on Friday, according to CNN.
Jim McGrath, spokesman for George H.W. Bush, would not comment on the hacking and said only that "we do not comment on matters under criminal investigation."
